Vitoriosas is the Portuguese word for victorious, and over the years the women had many victories. After the six week strike at First Canadian Place the employer offered the cleaners a 35cent per hour increase and a 25cent further increase for the second year of the agreement. This was considered a victory. One of the cleaners, Emilia Silva, shouted into a megaphone, “We have proven to everyone that we have the courage. We proved to Canada and to Olympia and York owners of the building that we are women, and we are immigrants but we can fight”.
