It was the perfect escape. We pulled open the heavy glass door. Inside there was a low buzz, the sound of people in silence together. A screen promoting LGBTQ Literary Dating flashed behind a woman browsing the new non-fiction books.
I ran toward the counter, where a grandfather was helping his granddaughter get her first library card. “Who supported Hallam’s campaign for a free library? Why was the door locked on Sunday? And when was the cornerstone laid? We don’t have much time.” The librarian leaned in. “You’ll find your next clue in the reference section. As for the date, it was 1912.” “Thank you.”
I hesitated. “And then where are we GOING next?”
