“Voices supported me to start a support group for mothers who were HIV positive, whether they had positive kids or not. We mentored each other to become the community’s leaders, through that group. It was one of the first support groups for mothers who were HIV positive internationally. I was invited to present the group at a 1996 international AIDS conference in Vancouver. It provided so many things. For me as an individual, it helped me to regain some of my self-esteem and self-worth, and to learn more about HIV, and to become an advocate.  I remember making decisions with women about whether or not they were going to continue their pregnancies. Because so many people were pushing them to not continue their pregnancies because they had HIV, back in the early days. And then I remember all the beautiful babies that were born.”
