“In the best of all possible worlds it could be expanded to accommodate more people. I can see the population is growing. I could feel that the past five to seven years.”

The whole TPL system has been actively fighting funding cuts for years.  Toronto libraries are currently serving more and more people but haven’t received adequate funds to meet the growing demand. One library worker told us: “I’ve worked in the library system all my life.  I remember when the library was a priority for the city.”  Through memory collection with library users and staff, the DEPARTMENT is learning about how diminished funds have placed an extra burden on library staff and programs.  In November of 2013 the Toronto Public Library Workers Union (CUPE Local 4848) held a Forum on the Future of Our Public Library to speak with the public about the importance of keeping the city’s libraries open, free, accessible and public.
